The Guild of Mining Engineering Students (GEMS) from 91¿ì»îÁÖ’s College of Engineering demonstrated their exceptional prowess at this year’s Youth Association for Responsible Mining and Natural Resources (YAMAN) Congress, sweeping the top three positions in all events held from November 19-22, 2024 at Baguio City.
In a stunning display of mastery in mining, metallurgy, and geology, the duo - Jhonriel C. Malicay and Prince Gerald Peter G. Salise - triumphed in the Ultimate YAMAN QuizBee, claiming the championship title against competitors from the University of the Philippines-Diliman and the University of Southeastern Philippines who placed second and third, respectively.
The momentum continued in the Debate Competition, where the compelling arguments of the 91¿ì»îÁÖ GEMS Debate Team composed of Jessil D. Gaid and Jan Nikko Q. Panangit clinched the 2nd Runner up out of 12 competing teams in the event.
Adding to their success, Reynz Steven B. Viernes, the GEMS president, earned recognition as Top Student Leader in the Minerals Industry and took the spotlight as 1st Runner-Up in the Mr. YAMAN pageant showcasing not only his leadership but also his confidence, wit, and charisma. The title of this year’s Mr. YAMAN was awarded to Mapua University, while Saint Louis University secured the 2nd Runner-Up.
Further cementing their success, GEMS, along with their coach and adviser Engr. Adrian Keith R. Caamiño received the Environmental Award for their commitment to environmental initiatives in Iligan City, including coastal clean-ups and tree-planting activities. This recognition reflects GEMS’ ongoing efforts to promote sustainable practices and environmental stewardship.
The exceptional performance of GEMS highlights the unwavering dedication and talent of the Mining Engineering Program of the University, solidifying its place as a powerhouse in the national congress.
The 9th YAMAN Congress is participated by 10 Mining and Geology universities in the Philippines and is organized by the Philippine Youth Association for Responsible Mining and Natural Resources (YAMAN Philippines). The event highlights the importance of responsible mineral development and cultivating environmental stewardship among future professionals.
The Congress is held in conjunction with the Annual National Mine Safety and Environment Conference (AMNSEC) organized by the Philippine Society of Mining Engineers (PSEM).
